People are often fascinated with death and how funeral directors operate. Not surprisingly, there have been a number of television shows (both fictional and reality-based) set in funeral homes and examining the issues that arise from dealing with death on a daily basis. So, which TV shows about funeral directors are worth checking out? We recommend starting with these.
Six Feet Under
The original and still the best ( in our opinion!), Six Feet Under first hit our screens in 2001 and ran for five brilliant seasons. It follows the lives of the dysfunctional Fisher family who run an independent funeral home in Los Angeles. Using dark humour, the show explores the comedic situations that arise from living permanently in the shadow of death as well as how the family deal with their own grief and loss while helping others to deal with theirs. Six Feet Under is widely considered to be one of the best TV shows of all time and frequently makes it on to ‘best ever’ lists. Winner of three Emmy Awards and three Golden Globes.
This Kiwi documentary currently showing on Netflix is proving a hit both in New Zealand and across the pond in Australia. It follows two Maori funeral directors and their family run business as they help Polynesian families cope with loss. The Casketeers gives viewers an interesting insight into different cultures and highlights how genuinely caring and passionate the staff at this funeral home are. A positive and accurate portrayal of how people deal with death and how a little bit of humour can go a long way.
Airing in 2004, this reality series followed the success of Six Feet Under and takes an in-depth look at the inner workings of a mortuary in San Diego. Running for four seasons, Family Plots focuses on the relationships between the employees (father and three daughters) as well as the grieving families they help. The show also respectfully depicts work down in the mortuary room, giving an interesting perspective on a profession not often spoken about.
